Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Tonga requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tonga
Immigration at Fuaʻamotu International Airport always asks for a return or onward ticket. If you don't have one, they will direct you to buy one on the spot — expect to pay a premium for a last-minute fare.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration officers may ask where you are staying. Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. A simple booking.com reservation works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask, but carry a bank statement or credit card showing at least 500 TOP (~$210 USD) per week of your stay. If you look like you might work or overstay, they will check.Recommended
No visa needed, but be prepared
You don't need a visa, but immigration may still ask for proof of onward travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone.
Passport validity is critical
Airlines check passport validity before boarding. If your passport has less than 6 months left, you may be denied boarding even if Tonga would let you in.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Fuaʻamotu International Airport (TBU)
You'll land at Tonga's main international airport near Nuku'alofa. After deplaning, follow signs to the immigration hall. There's usually one queue for all foreign visitors.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport (with at least 6 months validity and a blank page) and your return/onward ticket. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 90 days. No visa fee. The whole process usually takes 2–5 minutes per person.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any food, plants, or animal products — Tonga is strict about biosecurity.
