Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave Ukraine within the 90-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number works. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request proof you have enough money for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $50–100 per day. I've never been asked, but it's in the regulations.Recommended
Overstay penalties are strict
Staying beyond your 90-day visa-free period can result in a fine of up to 17,000 UAH (about $450) and a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.
Keep digital copies of all documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, accommodation bookings, and insurance policy on your phone and in cloud storage. If your documents are lost or stolen, these copies make replacement much easier.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies (screenshots or PDFs) on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at a Ukrainian border checkpoint
You'll enter through an airport (like Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, or Odesa) or a land border crossing. Join the queue for foreign passport holders — not the Ukrainian citizens line.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you plan to stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation confirmation.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — if the dates look wrong, ask for clarification immediately.
5
Keep your documents handy during your stay
While in Ukraine, carry your passport (or a certified copy) with you. Police can ask for ID at any time. Also keep your return ticket and accommodation info accessible in case you need to show them again.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Ukraine (even for a day) and re-enter, or apply for a long-stay visa at a Ukrainian embassy before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines up to 17,000 UAH (about $450) and a ban from re-entering for up to 3 years.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you plan to stay longer (which requires a visa), you must register with the local migration office within 30 days of arrival.
You cannot enter with less than 6 months validity. If your passport expires during your stay, contact your embassy (Israeli Embassy in Kyiv) for an emergency travel document. You'll need that to leave the country.
No, visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. For work or study, you must apply for the appropriate visa (work visa or student visa) at a Ukrainian embassy before traveling.
Yes, border officials have discretion. Common reasons for denial include: insufficient funds, no return ticket, unclear purpose of visit, or previous overstays. Always carry proof of accommodation, return ticket, and enough cash or a credit card to cover your stay.
The local currency is the Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). Bring some cash in euros or US dollars to exchange at banks or exchange offices — avoid exchanging at airports for poor rates. Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but rural areas may be cash-only.
No mandatory vaccinations for Israeli travelers. Routine vaccines (MMR, DTP, hepatitis A/B) are recommended. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
