Apply early — no visa, no boarding
Airlines check your visa status electronically before you board. Without an approved visa, you won't be allowed on the plane. Don't rely on last-minute applications — processing can take weeks.
SmartGate is available for Indian passports
At major Australian airports, you can use SmartGate kiosks to clear immigration faster. Just scan your passport and follow the prompts. This saves time, but you'll still need to have your visa linked to your passport.
Strict biosecurity laws
Australia has some of the world's toughest biosecurity rules. Declare any food, seeds, wood, or animal products. Fines for undeclared items start at AUD 2,664, and you could face prosecution. When in doubt, declare it.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au) and create an ImmiAccount. Choose the Visitor visa (subclass 600) for tourism or business visits. Fill out the application, upload required documents (passport scan, photo, financial evidence), and pay the fee (AUD 190 for most applicants). Processing can take from a few days to several weeks, so apply at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.
2
Wait for the visa decision
You'll receive an email notification once your visa is granted. Check the visa grant letter carefully — it states your visa number, conditions, and how long you can stay (usually up to 3, 6, or 12 months depending on your circumstances). Keep a copy on your phone and a printed copy in your carry-on.
3
Check your visa before flying
Before you head to the airport, verify your visa is still valid and linked to your passport number. Airlines use the Advance Passenger Processing (APP) system to confirm your visa status electronically. If there's a mismatch, you'll be denied boarding.
4
Arrive at the Australian border
After landing, follow the 'Foreign Passports' or 'ePassport' signs. Indian passports are eligible for SmartGate kiosks at major airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, etc.) — scan your passport and answer a few questions. If you're not eligible or prefer a staffed booth, join the queue. Have your passport, visa grant letter (if asked), and return ticket ready. The officer may ask about your stay, accommodation, and funds. Answer honestly and concisely.
5
Collect your baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, collect your luggage and proceed through customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Fines for undeclared items are heavy, so when in doubt, declare it.

Frequently asked questions

Processing times vary. For a Visitor visa (subclass 600), it can take anywhere from 5 days to 4 weeks, depending on your circumstances and the time of year. Check the current processing times on the Home Affairs website. Apply at least a month in advance to be safe.
The application fee for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) is AUD 190 (about INR 10,500 as of 2026). This is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused. Additional costs may apply for medical exams or biometrics if required.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) does not allow you to work. You can do business activities like attending meetings or conferences, but you cannot take up employment. Working without the correct visa can lead to deportation and a ban from re-entering Australia.
Not necessarily at the application stage, but you must have a return or onward ticket when you arrive in Australia. Immigration officers may ask to see it. It's best to have one booked before you travel.
No, the Visitor visa (subclass 600) is not extendable. You must leave Australia before your visa expires. Overstaying even by a day can have serious consequences, including a ban from re-entering Australia. Plan your stay carefully.
You will be refused entry and sent back on the next available flight at your own expense. Airlines also face fines for carrying passengers without valid visas, so they will not let you board without one. There is no visa-on-arrival for Indian citizens.
No, it's not mandatory for a Visitor visa, but it's strongly recommended. Australia's healthcare system (Medicare) doesn't cover visitors, and medical costs can be very high. A good travel insurance policy covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage.
