Indian passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to the United Kingdom for any purpose, including tourism, business, or visiting family. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Indian nationals — you must apply through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) system before you travel. Plan ahead, as processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK visaYou need to get a visa stamped in your passport before you fly to the UK.
Apply at a UK embassy or consulate
Indian citizens must obtain a UK visa before travel. You are not eligible for the UK eVisa system, so you must apply through the official visa application process at a UK embassy, consulate, or visa application centre. Apply well in advance of your planned travel date.Required
Passport validityYour passport must not expire soon after your trip – it needs to be valid for 6 months after you leave the UK.
At least 6 months
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of departure from the UK. Check your passport's expiry date before applying for your visa.Required
Blank passport pagesThe UK border officer needs a clean page in your passport to put your visa and entry stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the UK visa vignette and entry/exit stamps. Ensure the page is blank on both sides and free of any markings.Required
Return or onward ticketYou need to show you have plans to leave the UK, not stay indefinitely.
Proof of departure
Have a confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing you will leave the UK before your visa expires. This is typically checked at the border.Required
Proof of fundsYou should have bank statements or cash to prove you can support yourself while in the UK.
Sufficient money for your stay
Be ready to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your accommodation, living expenses, and return travel for the duration of your stay in the UK. This may be requested at the border.Required
Accommodation detailsYou need to show where you'll be staying during your visit.
Where you will stay
Have details of your accommodation in the UK, such as hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from a host. This is often required as part of your visa application and may be asked at the border.Required
Travel insuranceInsurance protects you if you get sick or have an accident while abroad.
Recommended
Although not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to have travel insurance covering medical expenses, trip cancellation, and other emergencies for your entire stay in the UK.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before you land.
Not required
No arrival declaration (such as a landing card or online form) is required for Indian citizens entering the UK.Not required
No eVisa or visa-on-arrival for Indian nationals
Despite the UK's general eVisa system, Indian passport holders are not eligible for an eVisa. You must apply through the standard UKVI process at an embassy or consulate. Don't fall for third-party sites offering 'fast-track eVisas' — they're scams.
Apply well in advance
Processing can take 3 weeks or more, and peak season can push it to 6–8 weeks. Apply at least 2 months before your planned travel date to avoid stress.
Overstaying is serious
The UK takes overstaying very seriously. Even a few days can lead to a ban from re-entering the UK for up to 10 years. Always leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Determine your visa type
Decide which visa you need — standard visitor, business, study, work, or family. Each has different requirements and fees. For most short trips, the Standard Visitor visa is the one.
2
Complete the online application
Go to the UKVI website (gov.uk) and fill out the online form. You'll be asked to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and upload your supporting documents. Take your time — errors cause delays.
3
Pay the fee and book biometrics
Pay the visa fee online. Then book an appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Centre. You'll receive a confirmation with your appointment details.
4
Attend the biometric appointment
Arrive at the VAC with your passport, appointment confirmation, and any original documents you were asked to bring. You'll give fingerprints and a photo. This usually takes 15–30 minutes.
5
Wait for a decision
Standard visitor visa processing typically takes 3 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons. You can track your application online. Some applicants may be asked for an interview or additional documents.
6
Receive your visa and travel
Once approved, you'll get a vignette (sticker) in your passport. Check the dates on it — you can't enter before the start date. When you arrive in the UK, go through the 'Other Passports' queue at border control and be ready to answer questions about your trip.

Transiting through United Kingdom

Transit visa required

Indian nationals generally require a Visitor in Transit visa to pass through UK border control (landside transit) unless they hold a valid UK visit visa, a visa for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the USA, or a valid Schengen visa (with certain conditions). Airside transit (without passing border control) may be visa-free if you have a confirmed onward flight and do not need to pass through UK immigration.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of valid UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or USA visas (for landside transit).
  • Holders of valid Schengen visa (with certain conditions, e.g., used once).
  • Holders of diplomatic or official passports.
  • Those with a confirmed onward flight and staying airside (no border control).

Yes, the application form is completed online at gov.uk. But you must still attend an in-person appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in India for biometrics. There's no fully online process for Indian nationals.
As of 2026, the fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £115 (about ₹12,000). Fees for longer visas (2, 5, or 10 years) are higher. The fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.
Yes, you should provide bank statements for the last 6 months showing you have enough money to cover your trip. UKVI wants to see that you can support yourself without working in the UK. There's no fixed amount, but your funds should match your travel plans.
No. A Standard Visitor visa is for tourism, visiting family, or short business activities (like meetings or conferences). You cannot take up employment or enroll in a course longer than 30 days. For work or study, you need a different visa type.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the issues raised. There's no appeal for visitor visas, but you can apply for an administrative review in some cases. It's best to consult with a visa advisor if you're refused.
Generally, no. Standard Visitor visas are not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the UK and apply for a new visa from your home country. Overstaying can lead to a ban from re-entering the UK.
