Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Nigeria eVisa at the Nigeria Immigration Service portal. The application requires a digital photo, passport scan, and travel itinerary. Processing takes 3–5 business days — do not book non-refundable flights until approved.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity beyond your intended departure date from Nigeria. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. A printed booking confirmation or e-ticket showing departure within your eVisa validity works. Without one, you risk being refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask for it at the counter, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $1,000 USD equivalent. Immigration officers occasionally ask for proof of sufficient funds for your intended length of stay.Recommended
eVisa required before boarding
Airlines check for approved visas before letting you board. Without an eVisa, you won't be allowed on the plane. Apply well in advance.
Yellow fever vaccination required
You must show proof of yellow fever vaccination (yellow card) upon arrival. No card = possible quarantine or denial of entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Nigeria Immigration Service portal (portal.immigration.gov.ng). Fill in your personal and travel details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the visa fee online. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa approval
Once approved, you'll get an email with a PDF approval letter. Print at least two copies — one to hand over at immigration, one as backup. Also save a copy on your phone.
3
Arrive at a Nigerian airport
Most travellers fly into Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV). At immigration, join the 'eVisa' or 'Visa on Arrival' queue. Present your passport, printed eVisa approval, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Have your hotel address ready in case an officer asks.
