Indian passport holders require a visa to visit New Zealand. There is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option for Indians. You must apply and receive approval before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA applicationNZeTA: New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority — required for visa-exempt visitors. Apply at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app ($17 NZD). Takes minutes to approve.
Electronic Travel Authority
Apply for your NZeTA before you fly. It costs $17 NZD via the app or $23 NZD via the website, and the International Visitor Levy ($35 NZD) is paid at the same time. Approval usually takes minutes, and the NZeTA is valid for 2 years.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from New Zealand
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned departure date from New Zealand. Airlines check this at check-in, so verify your passport expiry before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel booking or a letter from your host. Officers may ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Have a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses. Immigration can ask for proof of funds, though they rarely do for short visits.Recommended
You must have a visa before you fly
New Zealand does not offer visa on arrival or visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. Airlines will check your visa at check-in. Without a valid visa, you will not be allowed to board. Apply well in advance.
Biosecurity is taken very seriously
New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world. Never bring fresh fruit, meat, honey, plants, seeds, or used hiking boots with soil. If you do bring any item that might be restricted, declare it on your arrival card. Fines for non-declaration start at NZD 400, and you could face prosecution.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the Visitor Visa
Submit your application online at the Immigration New Zealand website. Create an account, fill in the form, upload scanned documents (passport photo, bank statements, itinerary, etc.), and pay the fee (currently NZD 211 plus NZD 35 International Visitor Levy, total NZD 246). Processing time is usually 20–30 days. Don't book flights until you receive the visa.
2
Receive your visa label or e-visa
Most Indian applicants get an electronic visa linked to their passport. You'll receive a letter via email. Print a copy and keep it with your travel documents. Check that all details are correct.
3
Travel to New Zealand
At the airport in India, the airline will check your passport and visa. You do not need an NZeTA – your visa replaces that. On arrival in New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington), follow signs to the 'Visitors' immigration queue. Have your passport, visa letter, return ticket, and proof of funds ready. You may be asked a few questions (purpose of visit, where you'll stay). An officer will stamp your passport with the permitted stay duration.
4
Clear customs and biosecurity
New Zealand has strict biosecurity. You must declare any food, plants, animal products, outdoor gear, or wooden items. Bags are often X-rayed or inspected. Penalties for non-declaration can be heavy. After customs, you're free to enter.
