Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Somalia eVisa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid on arrival
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Somalia does not enforce a strict 6-month rule beyond the stay, but airlines and immigration officers routinely check for it.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Mogadishu and Hargeisa airports ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Airlines also check this before boarding. Have a printed copy or digital booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-arranged tour operator.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Somalia is a cash-based economy — credit cards are rarely accepted outside major hotels.Recommended
Security situation
Somalia has active conflict zones and a high risk of terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime. Only travel if you have a clear, essential reason and have arranged local security support. Register with your embassy on arrival.
eVisa is your only option
There is no visa on arrival or visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. The eVisa must be obtained before you board your flight. Airlines may deny boarding without proof of an approved eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Somali eVisa portal (if available) or use a trusted visa service. Fill in your details, upload a passport photo, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 2–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF by email. Print at least two copies — one for your carry-on, one in your luggage. Also save a digital copy on your phone.
3
Arrive at Mogadishu or Hargeisa airport
Most international flights land at Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) in Mogadishu or Egal International Airport (HGA) in Hargeisa. Go to the immigration counter, present your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket.
4
Pass through immigration
The officer will check your documents, stamp your passport, and let you through. Have your accommodation address ready in case they ask. The process is usually straightforward.
