Required for entry
Immigration officers at Vatican City's border check for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. This applies even if you enter via Italy's Schengen zone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Vatican City. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you're staying overnight within the Vatican walls.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have bank statements or cash showing you can cover your stay. Vatican City does not publish a minimum amount, but having at least €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Vatican City has no airport — you enter through Italy
You must fly into Rome (FCO or CIA) and pass Italian border control. The Schengen visa you get from the Italian embassy covers both Italy and Vatican City. Don't try to enter via another Schengen country without checking visa rules — your visa must be issued by the country where you spend the most time.
Vatican Museums require advance booking
The Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel) are extremely popular. Book tickets online at least 2–3 weeks in advance, especially from March to October. Walk-in queues can be 2–3 hours long. The official website is museivaticani.va.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen Visa at the Italian Embassy
Book an appointment at the Italian embassy or consulate in India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru). Submit your application, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements, and a cover letter. Pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6). Processing takes 15–30 calendar days.
2
Wait for Visa Approval
The embassy may call you for an interview or ask for additional documents. Once approved, you'll get a visa sticker in your passport. Check the validity dates — they match your travel dates exactly.
3
Fly to Rome (FCO or CIA)
You'll land at Rome's Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) airport. Go through Italian border control — show your passport with the Schengen visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof. The officer may ask about your plans in Vatican City.
4
Enter Vatican City
From Rome, take the Metro (Line A to Ottaviano) or walk from central Rome (20–30 min from Termini). There's no border check between Italy and Vatican City — you just walk in. St. Peter's Square is the main entrance.
5
Enjoy Your Stay
Vatican City is tiny — you can see St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel in a day. No additional visa checks inside. Leave before your Schengen visa expires.

Frequently asked questions

No. Vatican City is not a Schengen member, but it has an open border with Italy. A valid Schengen visa (issued by Italy or any Schengen country) allows you to enter Vatican City freely. You don't need any additional visa.
Processing time is 15–30 calendar days from the date of your appointment at the Italian embassy. Apply at least 3 weeks before your trip. During peak season (April–October), it can take longer. The visa fee is €80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6.
No. Vatican City does not have a visa waiver for Indian passport holders based on other countries' visas. You must have a valid Schengen visa (or be a citizen of a visa-exempt country). A US or UK visa alone won't work.
You still need a Schengen visa. There's no 'transit' or 'day trip' exemption. Even if you're just visiting St. Peter's Basilica for an hour, you must have a valid Schengen visa to enter Italy and Vatican City.
No. Vatican City does not issue visa extensions. You must leave the Schengen Area before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from future Schengen travel. If you need more time, apply for a longer visa initially.
If you're transiting through Rome's Fiumicino or Ciampino airport and staying airside (not entering Italy), you don't need a Schengen visa. But if you leave the airport to visit Vatican City, even for a few hours, you need a Schengen visa.
Carry your passport with the valid Schengen visa sticker, a printed copy of your return flight ticket, hotel booking confirmation, and travel insurance certificate. Italian border police may ask for these at the airport. Inside Vatican City, there are no additional checks.
