Iraqi passport holders need a visa to enter Bulgaria in 2026. You must apply at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence before traveling — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option for Iraqi citizens.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (C-type) required
Apply for a short-stay Schengen visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Submit your application at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than 6 months in advance. Processing takes up to 15 calendar days.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Bulgaria. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Bulgarian law, but airlines may enforce a 3-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Border officers will ask for proof of onward travel — a return flight or a ticket to a third country. Have a printed or digital copy ready. This applies to all Schengen entries.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a notarized invitation letter from your host in Bulgaria. Immigration may ask for this at the border, especially if you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay — roughly €50–€60 per day. Cash or credit cards also work. Officers rarely ask, but it's better to have proof ready.Recommended
No e-visa or visa on arrival
Iraqi passport holders cannot use any electronic visa system for Bulgaria. You must go through the embassy process. Start at least 4 weeks before your trip.
Bulgaria uses Schengen visa rules
Even though Bulgaria is not fully in Schengen, the visa application process follows Schengen standards. This means strict document checks and biometric data collection. Prepare your paperwork carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visa at the Bulgarian embassy
Contact the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence to schedule an appointment. Submit your application, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, and bank statements. Pay the visa fee (around €80 for adults). Processing takes 10–15 working days.
2
Wait for visa approval
The embassy will process your application. You may be called for an interview. Once approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker. Check the visa validity dates carefully.
3
Arrive at Sofia Airport or any Bulgarian border
When you land at Sofia Airport (SOF) or cross a land border, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation proof. Answer clearly — they're checking you'll leave on time.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the number of days you're allowed to stay (usually matching your visa). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
