You'll need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa online, attend an in-person appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in Iraq to provide your biometrics, and wait for a decision before you can travel.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website, select 'Standard Visitor visa', and fill out the form. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and address in the UK. Save your application reference number.
2
Book and attend a biometric appointment
After submitting the form, book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Erbil or Baghdad. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any required documents. At the centre, you'll give fingerprints and a photo.
3
Submit your supporting documents
Upload your supporting documents online or bring them to the VAC (depending on the process). The staff will scan and return them. Keep copies for your records.
4
Wait for a decision
Processing typically takes 3 weeks, but can be longer during peak times. You'll receive an email when a decision is made, and your passport will be returned via the VAC.
5
Travel to the UK
Once your visa is approved, you'll get a vignette (sticker) in your passport. On arrival in the UK, go to the 'Non-EU' queue at border control. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready to show the Border Force officer.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes about 3 weeks after your biometric appointment. However, it can take longer during peak seasons (summer, Christmas). You can pay for priority processing (5 working days) or super priority (24 hours) if available at the VAC, but these cost extra.
Yes, you must complete the online application form on the UK Visas and Immigration website. But you still need to attend an in-person appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in Iraq to provide biometrics. There's no fully online process for Iraqi passport holders.
The fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £115. If you need a longer visa (2, 5, or 10 years), the fee is higher. The fee is non-refundable, and you'll also pay for any additional services like priority processing or courier return of your passport.
No, TB testing is only required if you're applying for a visa to stay in the UK for more than 6 months. For a standard visitor visa (up to 6 months), you don't need a TB certificate.
No, Standard Visitor visas are not extendable. You must leave the UK before your visa expires. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and apply for a new visa from Iraq.
You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reasons for refusal. The refusal letter will explain why. You can also request an administrative review in some cases, but this is only for certain visa types. It's often better to reapply with stronger evidence.
There are UK Visa Application Centres in Erbil and Baghdad. You can choose either when booking your appointment. Check the official VFS Global website for addresses and opening hours.
