Icelandic passport holders can travel to Cyprus without a visa for short stays. As of 2026, you can enter for tourism or business without applying in advance. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Cyprus
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your trip. Cyprus does not enforce the 6-month rule for EU/EEA nationals — as long as your passport covers your stay dates, you are fine. Airlines flying into Larnaca or Paphos rarely check validity beyond the stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Cyprus
Immigration at Larnaca and Paphos airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. A bus or ferry ticket to Greece works too — just show something that proves you leave within your visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Cyprus is enough. Airbnb bookings with the host's contact details also pass muster.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Cyprus does not have a fixed minimum amount, but officers expect to see enough cash or card balance for your stay. A bank statement or credit card with a few hundred euros available usually satisfies them. If you are staying with friends, a letter of sponsorship helps.Recommended
Cyprus is not in Schengen for visa purposes
Even though Cyprus is an EU member, it's not part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay in Cyprus is separate from the Schengen 90/180-day rule. You can use up your Schengen days and still travel to Cyprus, or vice versa.
Northern Cyprus entry
Entering Cyprus via the northern (Turkish-controlled) side may complicate future travel to the Republic of Cyprus or other EU countries. If you plan to visit both sides, always enter through a Republic of Cyprus port of entry (Larnaca or Paphos airports, or Limassol port).

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At Larnaca or Paphos airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying.
2
Present supporting documents if asked
If requested, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Keep them easily accessible — not buried in your bag.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the date is correct. You're allowed to stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Frequently asked questions

Icelandic citizens can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, business, or family visits. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study. If you plan to work (paid or unpaid), you need a work visa or permit arranged before you travel.
If you're transiting through Larnaca or Paphos airport and staying airside (not passing through passport control), you don't need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration to switch airports or terminals, you'll need to meet the standard visa-free entry conditions.
You may be denied boarding or entry. Cyprus strictly requires 6 months of validity from your arrival date. If your passport is damaged (torn pages, water damage), get a new one before traveling.
Extensions are not granted for visa-free stays. You must leave Cyprus before the 90-day limit. If you need to stay longer, apply for a temporary residence permit at the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia before your 90 days are up.
No, for stays under 90 days there's no registration requirement. Just enter with your passport and you're good.
Overstaying is a violation of immigration law. You may face a fine, deportation, or a ban from re-entering Cyprus or other Schengen countries. Always track your days carefully.
