Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Ecuador
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Airlines at Keflavik check this before boarding — I've seen people turned away for less.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ecuador
Immigration officers at Quito and Guayaquil routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket. A bus ticket to Peru or a flight to Colombia works — just show you're leaving within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask, but when they do, they want a printed copy or a clear phone screen.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or credit card
Carry a recent bank statement showing at least $500 USD or a credit card with a visible limit. I've never been asked for this entering Ecuador, but the law allows them to check.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in Ecuador. If it expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the gate.
No visa needed for 2026
Icelandic passport holders can enter Ecuador visa-free for up to 90 days. No application, no fee, no paperwork.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport in Ecuador
You'll go through immigration at Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE). Join the 'Foreigners' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and first night's accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day entry.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. You may be randomly selected for customs inspection. Otherwise, walk through the green channel.
