Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Estonia. Since Estonia is part of the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — count your days carefully.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Tallinn Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the border.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Estonia. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. The rule says you need about €100 per day, but in practice they rarely ask unless you look short on cash.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area, not just Estonia. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries (e.g., Germany, France, Italy) in the past 180 days, that time counts toward your limit. Keep track of your days.
Icelandic passport = smooth entry
Icelandic citizens enjoy visa-free access to all Schengen countries, including Estonia. You don't need to apply for anything in advance. Just show up with a valid passport and your travel documents.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or border crossing
You'll go through passport control. For EU/Schengen citizens there's a separate lane, but as an Icelandic passport holder you can use the 'All passports' lane. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where. Answer clearly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away — make sure it's legible and the date is correct. This stamp starts your 90-day clock.

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. This applies to the entire Schengen zone, not just Estonia. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, that counts toward your 90 days.
Extensions are not normally granted for tourism. If you need to stay longer for work, study, or family reasons, you must apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Contact the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board for details.
Your valid passport (6+ months validity), a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation for your first night, and travel insurance. Immigration may ask for any of these, so keep them handy.
Not strictly required for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Estonia can be high — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day. Insurance also covers trip cancellations and lost luggage.
Overstaying can result in fines, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area, or deportation. The Estonian authorities take overstays seriously. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Police and Border Guard Board immediately.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits only. You cannot take up employment or freelance work without a valid work permit or residence permit.
