Icelandic passport holders can enter Moldova without a visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case for several years and remains unchanged in 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Moldova. Airlines rarely check for 6 months validity beyond departure, but confirm with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Moldova
Immigration officers at Chișinău Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You should carry enough cash or a credit card to cover your expenses. Moldova does not publish a fixed minimum, but around €50 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Border checks can be thorough
Moldovan border officers sometimes ask detailed questions about your itinerary, accommodation, and funds. Have your booking confirmations and return ticket ready on your phone. Answer calmly and honestly.
Overstaying is not worth it
There's no extension option for visa-free stays. Overstaying even a day can lead to fines and a re-entry ban. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Chișinău International Airport
Most travellers fly into Chișinău (KIV). After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU/non-Schengen. There are usually separate queues for Moldovan citizens and foreigners.
2
Present your passport at the border booth
Hand over your Icelandic passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (up to 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.
