Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) and other land borders. Pay in cash (EUR or USD) — the fee is around €50–€100 depending on your nationality and length of stay. Have a passport photo ready.Required
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Senegal. Airlines may check this at check-in, but immigration at Dakar rarely enforces a 6-month rule. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Dakar airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a hotel booking. Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. A booking on your phone works too.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Immigration can ask for proof you can support yourself during your stay. Carry a recent bank statement or a credit card with a visible limit. Around €500–€1,000 in cash or card availability is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Cash is king at the visa counter
The visa-on-arrival fee is cash only. Bring euros or US dollars — they're accepted — but paying in XOF (West African CFA) gives you the best rate. There's an ATM at the airport, but it may run out of cash during busy periods.
Watch your passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Senegal. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied entry. Check your expiry date before you book flights.

What happens at the border

1
Land at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter near the main passport control hall. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a short form asking for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Fill it out in capital letters. Staff can help if needed.
3
Pay the visa fee
As of 2026, the fee is around 50,000 XOF (about €75). Pay in cash — euros or US dollars are accepted, but XOF is easiest. There's an ATM nearby if you need local currency.
4
Get your passport stamped
Hand over your form, passport, and payment. The officer will process it and stamp your passport. This usually takes 5–10 minutes. You'll get a 30-day stay (extendable once).
5
Proceed to passport control
With your visa stamp, join the main passport control queue. Show your passport and boarding pass. They may ask for your return ticket — have it ready. Then you're through.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend it once at the Direction de la Police des Frontières in Dakar. The extension costs about 20,000 XOF (€30) and gives you an additional 30 days. Go early in the morning to avoid long queues.
Visa on arrival is available at all major land borders, including the border with Mali and Guinea-Bissau. The process is similar — fill out a form, pay the fee, and get stamped. However, land border offices may have limited cash change, so bring small bills.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (most of sub-Saharan Africa). If you're flying directly from Iceland, it's not required, but carry your vaccination card just in case — border officials sometimes ask.
No, the visa-on-arrival fee is cash only. Bring euros or US dollars — they're widely accepted — but you'll get better rates if you pay in XOF. There's an ATM at the airport if you need local currency.
Usually 15–30 minutes total, depending on the queue. If multiple flights land at the same time, it can take up to an hour. The form is quick, and the processing is efficient.
Overstays are fined at the airport when you leave. The fine is about 5,000 XOF (€7.50) per day over. It's not a huge amount, but it's better to extend on time if you know you'll stay longer.
Yes, immigration will want to see proof you're leaving Senegal. If you're going overland to another country, show a bus ticket or a letter from your travel company. A screenshot works.
