High security risk
Afghanistan is an active conflict zone. The Italian government strongly advises against all travel. If you decide to go, hire professional security, avoid crowds, and have a solid evacuation plan.
E-visa is single-entry and non-extendable
Plan your itinerary carefully — once you leave, you'll need a new visa. And you can't extend your stay beyond the validity of the e-visa.
Processing times can be unpredictable
Even though the official processing is 3–5 business days, security checks can cause delays. Apply at least 2 weeks in advance, and don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to the official Afghan e-visa portal (evisa.mfa.af), create an account, fill in your details, upload your photo and documents, and pay the fee. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days, but can be longer depending on the security review.
2
Receive your e-visa by email
Once approved, you'll get a PDF e-visa. Print it out — you'll need a physical copy to show at check-in and at Afghan immigration. Keep a digital backup on your phone too.
3
Arrive at Kabul International Airport
At the airport, go to the immigration desk. Present your passport, printed e-visa, and your return ticket. The officer will check your details, stamp your passport, and let you through. Expect a thorough security screening before and after immigration.
4
Register with local authorities (if staying long-term)
If you plan to stay more than 30 days, you must register with the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the local police station. This is a legal requirement — failing to register can lead to fines or deportation.
