Bulgaria entry requirements for Italy passport holders
Italian passport holders can enter Bulgaria without a visa for short stays. Since 2026, Bulgaria is part of the Schengen area, so you can travel freely for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must cover entire stay | Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU nationals — as long as your passport is valid for the dates you're in the country, you're fine. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Recommended for visa-free entry | Immigration officers at Sofia Airport and land borders occasionally ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. | Recommended |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask for it for EU citizens, but having it ready avoids delays. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Bank statement or cash | Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/card to cover your stay. Bulgaria does not enforce a fixed minimum for EU nationals, but showing you can support yourself speeds things up if asked. | Recommended |
