Italian passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. This is the standard entry method for tourism and short business trips in 2025. The process is straightforward but requires a few things ready before you land.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Ethiopia eVisa
Apply online at evisa.gov.et before you fly. The eVisa costs $52 USD for a single-entry 30-day tourist visa and takes 3 business days to process. Print the approval letter and carry it with your passport — immigration at Addis Ababa Bole Airport checks it before they stamp you in.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Ethiopia
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Ethiopian immigration enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly — if your passport expires sooner, they will deny boarding at your departure airport.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for all arrivals
Ethiopian Airlines and immigration officers at Bole Airport always ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Have a printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a recent bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration rarely asks, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in USD cash. No cards, no euros, no birr. Bring crisp, undamaged $50 bills. ATMs are available after immigration but not at the visa counter.
Visa on arrival only at Addis Ababa airport
This service is only available at Bole International Airport. If you're entering Ethiopia by land or at another airport, you need an e-visa or embassy visa beforehand.

What happens at the border

1
Land at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport
Follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after you get off the plane. It's a dedicated counter before immigration. Queues can be long, especially during peak hours (morning and evening).
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll get a small form to fill out. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight number, address in Ethiopia. Have your accommodation address ready.
3
Submit documents and pay
Hand over your passport, completed form, passport photo (if asked), and the visa fee in USD cash. The officer will process it and give you a receipt.
4
Collect your passport with visa sticker
Wait a few minutes (usually 5–15). They'll call your name or hand it back. Check the visa sticker: make sure the dates and duration are correct.
5
Proceed to immigration
Now go to the immigration counter with your passport and visa sticker. They'll stamp you in. Keep the arrival card they give you — you'll need it when you leave.
