Italian passport holders can travel to Latvia visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Latvia joined the Schengen Area in 2007. You can enter for tourism, business, or family visits without applying for a visa in advance.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Latvia. Since Latvia is in Schengen, the 90/180-day rule applies across the whole zone — count your days carefully.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen
Border officers at Riga Airport will ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You might need to show you have enough money for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card — 50 EUR per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Latvia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 60 days in France, you only have 30 days left for Latvia and the rest of Schengen.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Riga International Airport (RIX)
Most Italian travellers fly into Riga. After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for EU/Schengen citizens and non-Schengen travellers. As an Italian passport holder, you use the EU queue.
2
Present your passport at the border checkpoint
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer honestly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or proof of accommodation.
3
Receive entry stamp (if requested)
For visa-free stays, you generally do not receive an entry stamp when entering from another Schengen country. If arriving directly from outside Schengen, you may get a stamp. Keep an eye on your passport to ensure the date is correct.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, collect your checked luggage from the carousel. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. If you have items over €430 or restricted goods, use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. The 180-day window is a rolling period — count back 180 days from any day of your stay to check you haven't exceeded 90 days.
No, Italian passport holders do not need a visa for Latvia for stays up to 90 days. This applies to tourism, business, and family visits. For longer stays (e.g., work, study, retirement), you need a national visa or residence permit.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism purposes. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a ban from the Schengen Area.
At passport control, you'll need your valid passport (6+ months validity), and may be asked for your return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds (bank statement or credit card). Travel insurance is not always required but recommended.
Denial is rare for Italian citizens, but it can happen if you cannot prove the purpose of your visit, have insufficient funds, or have a criminal record. Always carry supporting documents (return ticket, hotel booking, bank statement) to be safe.
Technically, the visa-free regime does not permit any form of work, including remote work for a foreign employer. However, enforcement is lax for short stays. If you plan to work remotely for more than a few weeks, consider Latvia's Digital Nomad Visa (requires proof of remote work and income).
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Italian Embassy in Riga (address: Elizabetes iela 2, Riga, LV-1010; phone: +371 6721 5000) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need a passport photo and the police report.
