Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Moldova. Moldova does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for Italian passport holders — just cover your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Moldova
Immigration officers at Chișinău Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Moldova doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but showing around €50 per day covers you if questioned.Recommended
No visa needed, but be prepared
While there's no visa requirement, border officers can still ask for proof of return travel and accommodation. Have digital copies ready on your phone to avoid delays.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you go. No exceptions are made at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Chișinău International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA and other nationals. As an Italian passport holder, you'll use the EU/EEA line. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask about your stay duration and purpose, and will stamp your passport. The process usually takes 1-2 minutes per person.
2
Land border crossings
If arriving by road from Romania or Ukraine, you'll go through a similar process at the border checkpoint. Have your passport and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation) ready. The officer may ask a few questions in Romanian or Russian, but English is often understood. Expect a short queue, especially on weekends.
3
Departure from Moldova
When leaving, you'll go through passport control again. The officer will check your exit stamp or verify your departure electronically. Make sure you haven't overstayed the 90-day limit. Overstays can result in fines or a ban from re-entry.
