Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in North Macedonia. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by law, but airlines may enforce a 3-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from North Macedonia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they may check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter of invitation from your host. Border officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers may ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €50–€100 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or credit card with a decent limit works fine.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers count 6 months from your entry date, not your departure. If your passport expires even one day before that 6-month mark, you'll be refused entry. Double-check before you fly.
Registration requirement for private stays
If you're not staying in a hotel, your host must register you at the local police station within 24 hours. This is a legal requirement. If they don't, you could be fined. Ask your host to confirm they've done it.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Skopje or Ohrid airport
You'll go through passport control. Join the queue for non-citizens. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, may ask for your return ticket and accommodation, then stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
2
Land border crossings (if driving or bus)
At land borders like Tabanovce (from Serbia) or Blace (from Kosovo), you'll get out of the vehicle and go to the immigration booth. Same checks as at the airport. Keep your passport and any vehicle documents handy. Expect slightly longer queues during summer weekends.
3
Register with local police (if staying > 3 days)
Your hotel or host must register you with the local police within 24 hours of your arrival. If you're staying in a private home, you or your host need to go to the nearest police station to complete the registration. This is a legal requirement, though rarely checked for short stays.
