Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Mongolia. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration at Ulaanbaatar's Chinggis Khaan International Airport will deny boarding if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Ulaanbaatar airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or the booking on your phone ready — they won't let you through without one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Mongolia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Immigration may ask to see it if you look like you're planning to work or overstay.Recommended
Visa-free for 30 days only
Italian passport holders can stay up to 30 days without a visa. This is not extendable. If you plan to stay longer, apply for a visa before you travel.
No arrival registration needed
Unlike some other countries, Mongolia does not require Italian visitors to register with immigration after arrival. Just keep your passport with the entry stamp.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar airport or border crossing
Most Italian travelers fly into Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) in Ulaanbaatar. Land borders from Russia or China are also possible but less common. At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' — there's usually one main queue for non-Mongolian citizens.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport (valid 6+ months) and your return/onward ticket. The officer may ask for your hotel address. They'll stamp you in — the whole process takes 2–5 minutes if there's no queue.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. There's nothing to declare for most tourists. You're free to enter Mongolia.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before traveling or leave and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines and future entry bans.
No, there is no arrival declaration or registration requirement for Italian passport holders. Just keep your passport with the entry stamp as proof of legal stay.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Mongolian immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Yes, you can enter via land borders, but the process is slower and less predictable. The same visa-free rules apply. Make sure your passport has enough validity and blank pages. Check border opening hours in advance.
If you're transiting through Mongolia to a third country and staying less than 24 hours, you may still need a visa unless you qualify for visa-free transit. Check with the Mongolian embassy or your airline. The 30-day visa-free rule applies to entry, not transit.
Overstaying can result in a fine of around 100,000–300,000 MNT (roughly €30–€90) per day, depending on the duration. You may also be banned from re-entering Mongolia for a period. Always leave on time.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But given the high cost of medical care in Mongolia (especially for evacuation from remote areas), it's strongly recommended. Some tour operators may require it.
