Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Rwanda. Airlines at check-in in Italy will also require it — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Rwanda. Immigration may ask for it at the counter, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a credit card with available balance. Officers rarely check, but you need to show you can cover your stay if asked.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa-on-arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD 50 in cash (crisp bills, no older than 2013) or the equivalent in Rwandan francs. ATMs are available but may not dispense USD.
East Africa Tourist Visa
If you're also visiting Kenya and Uganda, consider the East Africa Tourist Visa (USD 100). It allows multiple entries into all three countries for 90 days. You can apply for it online or get it on arrival at any of the three countries' entry points.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. The counter is in the arrivals hall, before baggage claim. Queue up — it usually takes 15–30 minutes.
2
Present your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (you'll get it on the plane or at the counter), and USD 50 cash. The officer will process the visa and stick it into your passport.
3
Proceed to passport control
With the visa in your passport, go to the passport control booth. The officer will stamp you in. You're now free to collect your bags and exit.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Rwanda offers visa on arrival at all official land border crossings, including those from Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and DR Congo. The process and fee (USD 50) are the same as at Kigali Airport.
The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days from the date of entry. It's a single-entry visa. If you need longer, you can apply for an extension at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali.
Yes, you can apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). The cost is about USD 30. You'll need your passport, a passport photo, and proof of sufficient funds. Processing takes 2–3 working days.
You must pay the visa fee in cash. USD is preferred, but Rwandan francs (RWF) are accepted at the official exchange rate. There are ATMs in the arrivals hall, but they may not always dispense USD. Bring cash to avoid delays.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Italy is not a risk country, but if you've traveled to any endemic country in the past 10 days, you'll need the certificate. Otherwise, it's not required.
Yes, you can apply for an e-visa online through the official Rwanda immigration website (migration.gov.rw). The cost is the same (USD 50), and processing takes about 3–5 working days. This can save time at the airport, but the visa on arrival is just as straightforward.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel. No exceptions are made at the border.
