Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Slovakia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries, not just Slovakia.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Slovak airports check for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they'll ask for it at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host in Slovakia. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show where you're staying for the entire trip.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Have at least €50–€100 per day of your stay available. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a sufficient limit works — officers may ask to see it if you look underfunded.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Slovakia, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
No visa needed — but keep documents handy
Italian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to Slovakia. Still, always carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation — immigration officers can ask for them.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save all confirmations as screenshots on your phone. Arrange travel insurance and a local eSIM if you want.
2
Arrive at a Schengen border checkpoint
You'll enter Slovakia through any Schengen airport (e.g., Bratislava, Vienna, Prague) or land border. At passport control, join the queue for non-EU nationals (even though you're EU, you'll use the separate line for third-country nationals if arriving from outside Schengen).
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of return. Answer clearly and calmly. They may stamp your passport — this is normal.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your checked luggage from the carousel. Then proceed through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Slovakia.
