Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Tonga. Airlines check this at check-in — if it expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tonga
Immigration officers at Fuaʻamotu International Airport ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a clear screenshot on your phone ready — they check this before letting you through.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Tonga. Officers rarely ask, but if you arrive without a clear address, they may pull you aside for extra questions.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing you can cover your stay. Tonga doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but around 200 TOP per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Tonga. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration checks it on arrival. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away.
No visa, but have your documents ready
You don't need a visa, but you still need a valid passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Keep digital copies on your phone and printed backups in your bag.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Fuaʻamotu International Airport (TBU)
After landing, follow signs to the immigration hall. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, return ticket (on your phone is fine), and accommodation details ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and hand back your passport. The whole process usually takes 5–10 minutes.
2
Present documents and receive entry stamp
Hand over your passport and answer any questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying). The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay period (90 days). Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a quick baggage check. Once through, you're free to enter Tonga.
