Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Ukraine. Ukraine does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Border officers at Kyiv Boryspil and Lviv airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you are staying. A hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A bank statement showing at least €50 per day of your trip, or a credit card with a reasonable limit, usually satisfies the requirement.Recommended
Martial law and travel safety
Ukraine is under martial law due to the ongoing war. Airspace is closed to civilian flights — you must enter by land from neighbouring countries. Check your government's travel advisories before planning your trip. Some regions near the front line are extremely dangerous.
Currency and payments
The local currency is the Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry some cash for rural areas and small vendors. ATMs are common. Exchange euros or dollars at banks or official exchange booths — avoid street changers.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before travel, check your passport has 6+ months validity and at least 1 blank page. Save digital copies of your return ticket, first night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance policy on your phone.
2
Arrive at the border
At any Ukrainian airport (Kyiv Boryspil, Lviv, Odesa) or land border crossing, join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and supporting documents ready.
3
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay period.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if flying) and then customs. No visa or additional forms needed.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave before 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a temporary residence permit at a local migration office before your 90 days expire, which requires a valid reason (work, study, family reunion).
Overstaying can result in a fine of 1,700 to 8,500 UAH (roughly €40 to €200), possible deportation, and a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. Always leave on time.
If you stay longer than 30 days, you must register your place of residence with the local migration office. Hotels usually do this for you. If you're in a private apartment, you need to do it yourself within 30 days of arrival.
Yes, Italian passport holders can enter Ukraine at any land border crossing from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova. The same visa-free rules apply. Expect longer queues at busy crossings, especially during holidays.
No, it's not a legal requirement for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended because medical costs can be high and public hospitals may require upfront payment. Many travellers buy a policy covering medical evacuation.
You will likely be denied entry. Ukrainian border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. If your passport is damaged (torn pages, water damage, etc.), get a new one before travelling.
Yes, you can work remotely for a foreign employer without a visa. But you cannot take a job with a Ukrainian company or receive payment from a Ukrainian source without the appropriate work visa.
