Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and other designated entry points. Have $50 USD in cash for a single-entry tourist visa (up to 90 days). The visa officer will ask for your return ticket and accommodation details — have printed copies ready.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date
Your passport must have at least two blank pages for the visa sticker and entry/exit stamps. Immigration at DAR and JRO checks the 6-month validity strictly — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
You must show a confirmed onward ticket leaving Tanzania before your visa expires. Immigration officers at DAR and JRO check this before issuing the visa on arrival. Budget airlines like Precision Air and Fastjet will refuse boarding without proof of onward travel.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Have a printed hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration officers at DAR and JRO may ask for this during the visa on arrival process. A booking on Booking.com or Airbnb works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays. ATMs at DAR and JRO dispense Tanzanian shillings, not USD.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in US dollars cash. No cards, no other currencies. Bring exact change ($50 or $100) — the counter may not have change for large bills.
E-visa alternative available
You can also apply for an e-visa online before travel at www.immigration.go.tz. It costs the same ($50 single entry) and takes about 10 days to process. If approved, you skip the visa-on-arrival queue and go straight to immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out arrival form on the plane
You will get a Tanzania arrival card during the flight. Fill it out with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep it with your passport.
2
Queue at Visa on Arrival counter
After landing at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. There is usually a separate queue from e-visa holders. Have your passport, arrival card, and $50 USD ready.
3
Pay the visa fee and get your sticker
Hand over your passport and cash. The officer will process your visa, stick it in your passport, and stamp it. This takes about 5-10 minutes. Keep the receipt.
4
Proceed to immigration control
With your visa sticker in hand, join the main immigration queue. Present your passport, visa, and arrival card. They may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking — have them ready on your phone.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare. Welcome to Tanzania.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, visa on arrival is available at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar), and most land border crossings. However, for land borders, it is best to have exact USD cash — card machines are rare.
Single entry is $50 USD. Multiple entry is $100 USD. Only US dollars are accepted — no other currencies. Bring small bills if possible.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 90 days, you would need to leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before travel.
Tanzania requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Jordan is not a risk country, so if you are flying directly from Jordan, you do not need it. But if you have recently been in a risk country (e.g., parts of South America or Africa), you will need the certificate.
You may be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry by immigration. Airlines are strict about this because they are fined if they bring passengers without onward travel. Always have a refundable onward ticket if you are unsure of your plans.
No, the visa-on-arrival fee is cash only — US dollars. There are ATMs at the airport, but they dispense Tanzanian shillings, not USD. Bring USD cash from home.
Usually 10-20 minutes at the visa counter, plus another 10-15 minutes at immigration. During peak hours (evening arrivals at DAR), it can take up to 45 minutes total. E-visa holders often skip the visa queue, so consider applying online if you want to save time.
