Extreme security risk
Afghanistan is an active conflict zone. The Japanese government advises against all travel. If you decide to go, you do so at your own risk. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers war and terrorism, and register with your embassy.
E-visa is not extendable
The e-visa allows a maximum stay of 30 days and cannot be extended. Overstaying is a serious offense and can lead to fines, detention, or deportation. Plan your exit carefully.
Carry physical copies
Print your e-visa and keep it with your passport. Also save a digital copy on your phone. Internet access can be unreliable, and border officials may not accept a digital-only version.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to the official Afghan e-visa portal (evisa.mfa.af) and fill out the application form. Upload your passport scan, photo, and travel details. Pay the fee (around $80 USD, non-refundable) and submit.
2
Wait for processing
Processing typically takes 5–10 business days, but can be longer. Check your email for the approval or any requests for additional documents. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the e-visa.
3
Print or save your e-visa
Once approved, you'll receive a PDF. Print a physical copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and to Afghan immigration.
4
Arrive at the port of entry
At Kabul International Airport (or other border crossings), go to the immigration desk. Present your passport and printed e-visa. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready in case they ask.
5
Receive your entry stamp
After verification, the officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the duration of stay (usually 30 days). Keep the stamp intact — you'll need it when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

No. Afghanistan does not offer visa-on-arrival for Japanese passport holders. You must obtain an e-visa before you travel. The e-visa is the only way to get a visa for tourism or business.
Processing usually takes 5–10 business days, but it can be longer depending on the volume of applications and security checks. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your planned travel date to be safe.
The fee is approximately $80 USD, payable online via credit or debit card. The fee is non-refundable, even if your application is denied.
The e-visa typically allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not extendable, so you must leave before the expiry date. Overstaying can result in fines or detention.
If rejected, you'll receive an email explaining the reason (often incomplete documents or security concerns). You can reapply with corrected information, but the fee is not refunded. There is no appeal process.
No, yellow fever vaccination is not required for entry. However, it's recommended to be up-to-date on routine vaccines and consider hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio boosters. Check with your doctor before travel.
The security situation is extremely volatile. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to Afghanistan. If you must go, hire professional security, avoid large gatherings, and stay in secure accommodations. The e-visa process does not guarantee safety.
