Japanese passport holders need a visa to enter Australia in 2026. The simplest option for short visits is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which you apply for online before flying. Apply at least a week ahead — processing can take a few days.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisitor visa (subclass 651)You need to get this online visa approval before you fly to Australia.
Apply online before travel
Japanese passport holders must apply for an eVisitor visa online before departure. The visa is free of charge and typically processed within 1-2 business days. It allows stays of up to 3 months per visit for tourism or business visitor purposes.Required
Passport validityMake sure your passport doesn't expire within 6 months of your arrival date.
At least 6 months remaining
Your Japanese passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of arrival in Australia.Required
Blank passport pagesYou need an empty page in your passport for border officials to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps and visa labels (if any).Required
Return or onward ticketHaving a booked flight out of Australia helps show you're a genuine visitor.
Recommended to have proof
While not explicitly required for Japanese citizens, Australian immigration may ask for evidence of a return or onward ticket to confirm you intend to leave before your visa expires. It is strongly recommended to have one.Recommended
Proof of sufficient fundsIt's a good idea to have proof that you can support yourself during your trip.
Recommended to carry evidence
Although not a formal requirement, you may be asked to show you have enough money to cover your stay in Australia. Carrying bank statements or credit cards is advisable.Recommended
Australian Travel DeclarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before you land.
Not required
No arrival declaration is required for Japanese passport holders entering Australia. The previous Digital Passenger Declaration is no longer in use.Not required
Visa extensionYou can't stay longer than your visa allows, so plan your trip accordingly.
Not permitted
The eVisitor visa cannot be extended. You must leave Australia before your visa expires, and you cannot apply for a new visa while in the country on this visa. Not required
Apply early — don't wait until the airport
While most ETAs are approved quickly, some applications are referred for manual processing and can take days. Apply at least a week before departure to avoid stress.
Your ETA is valid for 12 months
Once approved, you can enter Australia multiple times within that year, as long as no single stay exceeds 3 months. No need to reapply for each trip.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the official Australian Department of Home Affairs website or use the ETA app. Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few questions. Pay the fee (AUD 20). Approval usually comes within minutes to a few days.
2
Check your ETA status
You'll receive an email confirming approval. The ETA is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, and you can stay up to 3 months per visit. Double-check that your name matches your passport exactly.
3
Prepare your documents for travel
Print or save on your phone: your ETA confirmation, return/onward ticket, first night accommodation booking, and travel insurance details. Keep them easily accessible.
4
Arrive at the airport in Japan
Check in with your airline. They'll verify your ETA is linked to your passport. No additional paperwork needed at check-in beyond your passport and boarding pass.
5
Go through Australian immigration
At airports like Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, use the SmartGate kiosk if eligible (Japanese passports are). Scan your passport, answer a few questions on screen, and get a ticket. Hand it to the officer. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation details.
