Australia entry requirements for Japan passport holders
Japanese passport holders need a visa to enter Australia in 2026. The simplest option for short visits is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which you apply for online before flying. Apply at least a week ahead — processing can take a few days.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| eVisitor visa (subclass 651)You need to get this online visa approval before you fly to Australia. Apply online before travel | Japanese passport holders must apply for an eVisitor visa online before departure. The visa is free of charge and typically processed within 1-2 business days. It allows stays of up to 3 months per visit for tourism or business visitor purposes. | Required |
| Passport validityMake sure your passport doesn't expire within 6 months of your arrival date. At least 6 months remaining | Your Japanese passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of arrival in Australia. | Required |
| Blank passport pagesYou need an empty page in your passport for border officials to stamp. At least 1 blank page | Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps and visa labels (if any). | Required |
| Return or onward ticketHaving a booked flight out of Australia helps show you're a genuine visitor. Recommended to have proof | While not explicitly required for Japanese citizens, Australian immigration may ask for evidence of a return or onward ticket to confirm you intend to leave before your visa expires. It is strongly recommended to have one. | Recommended |
| Proof of sufficient fundsIt's a good idea to have proof that you can support yourself during your trip. Recommended to carry evidence | Although not a formal requirement, you may be asked to show you have enough money to cover your stay in Australia. Carrying bank statements or credit cards is advisable. | Recommended |
| Australian Travel DeclarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before you land. Not required | No arrival declaration is required for Japanese passport holders entering Australia. The previous Digital Passenger Declaration is no longer in use. | Not required |
| Visa extensionYou can't stay longer than your visa allows, so plan your trip accordingly. Not permitted | The eVisitor visa cannot be extended. You must leave Australia before your visa expires, and you cannot apply for a new visa while in the country on this visa. | Not required |

Transiting through Australia
Japanese passport holders transiting through Australia are generally exempt from a transit visa if they hold a valid ETA or a confirmed onward ticket and stay airside. However, if you need to leave the airport or your transit is longer than 8 hours, you must apply for a Transit visa (subclass 771) or a Visitor visa.
- If you have a valid ETA, you can transit without a separate transit visa.
- If you are a citizen of Japan, you may be eligible for a transit waiver if you remain airside and your connecting flight departs within 8 hours.
