Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Côte d'Ivoire eVisa at the SNEDAI portal. The application takes about 15 minutes — upload a passport photo and your passport data page. Processing usually takes 2–3 business days, and the eVisa is valid for a single entry up to 90 days.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your Japanese passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Côte d'Ivoire does not require 6 months of validity beyond your stay — just enough to cover the dates you're in the country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for it
Have a return or onward flight booking ready. Officers at Abidjan airport occasionally ask to see proof of departure, especially if you arrive without a pre-arranged visa.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel reservation for your first few nights. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card showing sufficient balance
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around 500 USD equivalent is a safe buffer.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
You must show your yellow fever vaccination certificate (yellow card) at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport — at your own expense.
Currency and cash
Côte d'Ivoire uses the West African CFA franc (XOF). Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants in Abidjan, but cash is king everywhere else. Bring euros or USD to exchange — Japanese yen is hard to change.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to the official Côte d'Ivoire e-visa portal (snedai.com). Fill in your personal details, passport info, travel dates, and upload a passport-style photo. Pay the fee online with a credit card. Processing usually takes 3–7 business days.
2
Receive and print your visa approval
Once approved, you'll get a PDF visa approval letter by email. Print it out — you'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival. Save a digital copy on your phone as backup.
3
Arrive at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport (ABJ)
Most flights from Japan arrive via Paris or Dubai. At Abidjan airport, head to the immigration queue. Have your passport, printed visa approval, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will stamp your passport and issue the visa sticker.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's a customs check — declare any large amounts of cash or restricted items. Then you're free to exit into the arrivals hall.
