Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Cyprus
Your Japanese passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Cyprus. Cyprus does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for Japanese nationals — as long as your passport covers your travel dates, you are fine. Airlines may still ask for 6 months validity, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Cyprus
Immigration officers at Larnaca and Paphos airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. This applies even if you are entering visa-free as a Japanese passport holder.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter of invitation from your host in Cyprus. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you are staying for more than a few days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement, credit card, or cash equivalent to at least €50 per day of your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask for this for Japanese nationals, but it is better to have it ready if questioned.Recommended
Cyprus is not Schengen
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Cyprus is separate from the Schengen 90/180-day rule. You can spend 90 days in Cyprus and another 90 days in the Schengen Area, as long as you respect each zone's limits.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Immigration officers check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close, renew before you go. There are no exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Larnaca or Paphos airport
Most flights from Japan arrive via a European hub. At passport control, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They will stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional forms or fees for Japanese passport holders.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days within any 180-day period. Extensions are not available for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
No. For stays under 90 days, there is no registration requirement. Just enter and enjoy your trip.
Tourist visa-free entry does not permit any work for a Cyprus-based employer. Remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated for short stays, but officially you are not allowed to 'work' in Cyprus. If you plan to work remotely, keep it low-key and avoid mentioning it at immigration.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
The border between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus is open. Japanese passport holders can cross freely, but note that Northern Cyprus is not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus. If you enter via Northern Cyprus, you may face issues when trying to cross to the south or when leaving the island.
As of 2026, there are no COVID-19 entry restrictions for Cyprus. No tests, no vaccination proof needed. This can change, so check official sources before departure.
No. Cyprus is not part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa does not grant entry to Cyprus. Japanese passport holders do not need any visa for short stays anyway.
