Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Mongolia. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date, but Mongolian immigration only requires it to cover your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital booking ready on your phone.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask, but having a bank statement or credit card showing access to around 500,000 MNT per day (roughly $150 USD) covers you if they do.Recommended
Visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits only
You cannot work or study under this visa-free arrangement. For work or study, you need to apply for the appropriate visa at a Mongolian embassy before traveling.
Overstaying is expensive
Overstaying even one day can result in a fine of around 50,000 MNT (about $15 USD) per day, and you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Ulaanbaatar (Chinggis Khaan International Airport)
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, ask your purpose of visit, and may ask for your onward ticket. They'll stamp you in — the whole process takes 2–5 minutes.
2
Collect your luggage and exit customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. There's a customs declaration form to fill if you're carrying over 15 million MNT (about $4,400 USD) or restricted goods. Otherwise, just walk through the green channel.
