Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Panama. Airlines at check-in may enforce a 6-month validity rule, but Panama's immigration only requires validity covering your visit.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within 90 days. Airlines at departure may also check this before boarding. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host handy. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it speeds things up if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry evidence of at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash, credit cards, or bank statements. Immigration may ask to see it, especially if you arrive without a return ticket.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the basics
You don't need to apply for anything before you go, but immigration still expects to see a valid passport, a return ticket, and sometimes proof of accommodation. Have these ready.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines and immigration both check the 6-month rule. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away at check-in or at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Most travellers fly into Panama City's Tocumen Airport. Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate queues for Panamanian citizens and foreigners — join the 'Extranjeros' line.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp your entry, and may ask how long you plan to stay. Answer honestly — 90 days is the max.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red channel system — if you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.
