Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Uganda eVisa
Apply for your Uganda eVisa at the official portal before travel. The eVisa is mandatory for Japanese passport holders. Processing typically takes 2–3 business days, and you'll receive an approval letter by email — print it and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Japanese passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your intended stay in Uganda. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Uganda
Immigration officers at Entebbe Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Uganda. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or enough cash (around $300 USD equivalent) to show you can cover your stay. Immigration rarely checks, but it's a standard entry requirement on paper.Recommended
Print your eVisa — don't rely on your phone
Immigration at Entebbe Airport and land borders often require a printed copy of your eVisa approval. A digital version on your phone may not be accepted, and you could be delayed or denied entry. Print it before you leave.
Yellow fever vaccine is mandatory
You must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate at immigration. Without it, you may be quarantined or denied entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Uganda eVisa portal (visas.immigration.go.ug). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $50 for a single-entry tourist visa) with a credit card. Processing takes 2–5 business days, sometimes longer. You'll receive the approval by email as a PDF.
2
Print the eVisa approval
Print the eVisa approval email and keep it with your passport. Immigration at Entebbe Airport or any land border will ask to see it. A digital copy on your phone is not always accepted — print it.
3
Arrive at Entebbe Airport (or land border)
At Entebbe, follow signs to 'Immigration' after baggage claim. Hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes if you have all documents ready.
4
Keep your documents handy during your stay
Uganda police or immigration may do spot checks, especially in tourist areas. Keep your passport and eVisa with you at all times. A photocopy is fine for daily use, but carry the original when traveling between cities.
