Japanese passport holders can visit Kosovo visa-free for up to 90 days. This policy has been in effect since 2019 and covers tourism, business, and short-term visits. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Japanese passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Kosovo. Airlines sometimes enforce 6-month validity — if your passport expires within 6 months, carry proof of your return flight to show the check-in agent.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kosovo
Immigration officers at Pristina International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly €50 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works fine.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Kosovo, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Overstaying has consequences
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period can result in fines and a re-entry ban. Always leave before your stamp expires. If you need to stay longer, apply for a temporary residence permit before your 90 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night's accommodation. Save all confirmations as PDFs or screenshots on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Pristina International Airport (PRN)
Most travellers fly into Pristina. After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for EU/EEA and other nationals — Japanese passport holders use the 'Other' queue. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
The officer will check your passport and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for supporting documents, but have your return ticket and accommodation details accessible just in case.
4
Receive your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away. You're now free to enter Kosovo.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Kosovo before the 90 days are up. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit from the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs before your 90 days expire — but this is for long-term stays, not tourism.
No, Japanese passport holders don't need any visa for Kosovo regardless of other visas. The visa-free entry is based solely on your Japanese passport.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, banned from re-entering Kosovo for a period, or both. The fine amount varies but can be several hundred euros. Always leave before your stamp expires.

Also, note that Serbia considers Kosovo part of its territory, so if you enter Kosovo from Serbia, you may need to show your passport at both the Serbian exit and Kosovo entry points.
No, there is no registration requirement for short stays. Hotels will register you automatically. If you're staying in private accommodation, you don't need to do anything extra.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. However, it's strongly recommended because medical costs for foreigners can be high. A basic policy covering medical evacuation is cheap and gives peace of mind.
