Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Rwanda. Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport check this at the counter — they won't let you through if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration at Kigali will ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Budget airlines like RwandAir and Kenya Airways check this at check-in too — have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if you're flagged for secondary screening, they'll want to see where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask how you'll fund your trip. Have a bank statement or credit card handy — they're looking for enough cash to cover accommodation and daily expenses, roughly $100–$200 per day.Recommended
Visa-free since 2024
Kenya and Rwanda have a bilateral agreement allowing visa-free travel for up to 180 days. No need to apply or pay anything.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land. If it's close to expiry, renew before you go — you will be turned away.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport or land border
You'll join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and you're done. No visa fee, no forms.
2
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage. Customs is usually quick — just walk through unless you have something to declare.
3
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to exit. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Yego are available outside.
