What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visa at a Turkmen embassy
Contact the nearest Turkmen embassy or consulate. You'll need to submit a completed application form, your passport, passport photos, and a letter of invitation. Processing takes 2–4 weeks. Some embassies allow postal applications.
2
Receive your visa approval
Once approved, the embassy will issue a visa sticker in your passport. Check the validity dates — entry and exit dates are usually fixed. You cannot arrive earlier or leave later than the dates on the visa.
3
Arrive at Ashgabat International Airport
At immigration, present your passport with the visa sticker, your return ticket, and your hotel booking. The officer may ask a few questions about your trip. Expect a short queue.
4
Register with the State Migration Service
Within 3 days of arrival, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration office. If you're staying in private accommodation, you must do this yourself at the nearest OVIR office. Keep the registration slip — you'll need it when you leave.
