Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Baku may ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Azerbaijan. Border officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended

Visa on arrival is straightforward
The process at Baku airport is well-organised and usually takes under 15 minutes. Have your documents ready and cash in hand to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Land at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' counters before you reach passport control. These counters are clearly marked and located in the arrivals hall.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a short form asking for your name, passport number, flight details, and accommodation address. Fill it out in block capitals.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your form and passport to the officer. Pay the fee — cash (USD or EUR) is fastest, but some counters accept credit cards. Keep the receipt.
4
Wait for processing
Processing usually takes 5-10 minutes. You'll be called when your visa is ready. The visa is a sticker placed in your passport.
5
Proceed to passport control
Take your passport with the new visa sticker to the immigration queue. Present your passport, visa, and any supporting documents if asked (return ticket, hotel booking).
6
Collect your luggage and exit
After the officer stamps you in, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Azerbaijan.

Frequently asked questions

Visa on arrival is available at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku and at land border crossings with Georgia, Russia, Iran, and Turkey. The process is similar — fill a form, pay the fee, get the sticker. But the airport is the most straightforward.
The standard visa on arrival allows a stay of up to 30 days. If you need longer, you can apply for a different visa type in advance through an embassy or e-visa portal.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must leave the country and re-enter, or apply for a different visa before you travel.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions.
If you stay airside and don't pass through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need a visa on arrival or an e-visa.
It's safer to pay in USD or EUR. Some counters accept manat, but the exchange rate may not be favourable. Bring crisp, undamaged US dollar bills.
Immigration may deny you entry. Airlines also check this before boarding. Book a refundable ticket or one with free cancellation if you're unsure of your plans.
