Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Guatemala. Airlines at check-in will verify this before you board.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight reservation ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements or a credit card ready to show you have enough money for your trip. No fixed amount is published, but carrying at least $500 USD equivalent is a safe bet.Recommended
Entry stamp check
Always check the entry stamp in your passport before leaving the immigration counter. Make sure the number of days written matches what you expect. If there's an error, ask the officer to fix it immediately.
No visa extension available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Guatemala and re-enter after a short absence. Overstaying can lead to fines and entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at La Aurora International Airport (GUA)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There's usually one queue for all foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 90). Check the stamp before walking away. If something looks off, ask the officer to correct it.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare. Random bag checks happen occasionally.
