Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (C type)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Submit the application at least 15 days before travel — processing takes up to 15 calendar days. Use the official visa portal to find the application form and appointment booking system.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from Bulgaria
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned exit date from Bulgaria. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Border officers ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. A flight booking or bus/train ticket works — just have it ready on your phone or printed. Budget airlines at Sofia Airport check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask for a hotel reservation covering your entire stay, or a notarized invitation letter from a Bulgarian host. A booking confirmation from Booking.com or Airbnb works — just make sure it shows your name and dates. Keep a printed copy or have it accessible offline on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a bank statement from the last 3 months showing at least €50 per day of your stay. A credit card with a decent limit also works — just have a recent statement ready. Border officers rarely check this for Schengen visa holders, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take up to 45 days. Do not book non-refundable flights or hotels until you have the visa in hand.
Bulgaria uses Schengen visa rules
Although Bulgaria is not yet in the Schengen Area, it uses the same visa application form and requirements. If you have a valid Schengen visa, you can enter Bulgaria without a separate Bulgarian visa.
