Kazakh passport holders need a visa to visit Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa-free access or eTA option for Kazakhstan citizens. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
You need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4–6 weeks before travel. The fee is CAD 100, and processing times vary by country.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Canada. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Canadian law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Without it, you risk being denied boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact info. Officers may ask where you're staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing sufficient funds for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but CAD 1,000–2,000 per month is a safe benchmark. Officers can ask for proof at the border.Recommended
Visa required — no eTA option
Kazakhstan is not on the list of eTA-eligible countries. You must apply for a full visitor visa (TRV) before traveling. Do not book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
Biometrics are mandatory
All applicants aged 14 to 79 must provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo). You must visit a VAC in person — there is no way to skip this step. Book your appointment as soon as you get the instruction letter.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport, bank statements, employment letter, travel itinerary, and any invitation letters. Scan everything as PDFs or JPEGs.
2
Apply online via IRCC
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the IMM 5257 form, upload your documents, and pay the visa fee (CAD 100 single or CAD 500 multiple entry) plus biometrics fee (CAD 85).
3
Book and attend biometrics appointment
After submitting, you'll get a Biometric Instruction Letter. Book an appointment at the Visa Application Centre in Nur-Sultan or Almaty. Bring your passport and the letter. They'll take your fingerprints and photo.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing time is 2–4 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons. You can check your application status online.
5
Receive your visa and travel
If approved, you'll get a visa sticker in your passport. Fly to Canada. At the border, show your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation details. The officer may ask about your plans — answer honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing time is 2 to 4 weeks, but it can take longer during busy periods (summer, holidays). Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel date. You can check current processing times on the IRCC website.
No. Canada does not have a visa office in Kazakhstan. You apply online through the IRCC portal, and biometrics are taken at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Nur-Sultan (Astana) or Almaty. The actual visa processing is done by the Canadian visa office in Ankara, Turkey.
A single-entry visa (CAD 100) lets you enter Canada once. If you leave Canada (even to the US), you need a new visa to return. A multiple-entry visa (CAD 500) is valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, and you can come and go as many times as you want during that period. Most applicants get the multiple-entry visa.
Yes, unless you qualify for the China Transit Program (which does not apply to Kazakhstan). If you have a layover in Canada and need to clear customs (e.g., switching flights), you need a visitor visa or a transit visa. A transit visa is free but still requires an application. Check with your airline.
You will receive a letter explaining the reason (e.g., insufficient funds, weak ties to Kazakhstan). You can reapply with stronger documentation. There is no appeal process. Common fixes: provide more bank statements, a letter from your employer, or property ownership proof. The visa fee is non-refundable.
Yes, you can apply for a visitor record extension before your current visa expires. You must show you have funds to support yourself and a reason to stay longer (e.g., tourism, visiting family). The extension fee is CAD 100. Overstaying can affect future visa applications.
You don't need to have the ticket before the visa is approved, but you should have a planned itinerary. Once the visa is issued, you must have a confirmed return or onward ticket before boarding your flight to Canada. Immigration at the border may ask to see it.
