Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in China. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from China
Immigration officers at Chinese airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may check it before issuing your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration rarely asks for it, but having it on your phone avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough funds for your trip. Immigration officers rarely check this for short visits, but it's smart to have it accessible.Recommended
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay past 30 days, you'll be fined 500 CNY per day. Over 10 days, you could be detained and deported. Set a reminder to leave on time.
No visa needed — but be prepared
You don't need a visa, but immigration still checks your passport validity, return ticket, and accommodation. Have them ready.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book a return ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Chinese port of entry
You can enter via any international airport (Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, etc.) or land border crossing. Visa-free entry is available at all ports.
3
Go through immigration
Join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 30-day stay.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags and proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a proper visa (e.g., tourist L visa) at a Chinese embassy before traveling. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
You need to apply for a visa in advance. For tourism, get an L visa from the Chinese embassy in Nur-Sultan or Almaty. Processing takes about 4-7 working days and costs around $30-60 depending on urgency.
Yes, you can enter multiple times as long as each stay is 30 days or less. But there's no official 'cooling-off' period — just don't overstay. Frequent back-to-back trips may raise questions at immigration.
No, China does not require an arrival declaration form for visa-free entry. You just hand over your passport and boarding pass.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined about 500 CNY per day (up to 10,000 CNY total), and may be detained, deported, or banned from re-entering China for a period. Leave before your 30 days are up.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or transit only. Working or studying requires the appropriate visa (Z or X visa). Doing otherwise is illegal and can get you deported.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Chinese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. There are no exceptions.
