Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kyrgyzstan
Immigration at Manas International Airport occasionally asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight or bus ticket ready to show if requested.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers rarely ask for hotel bookings, but having a printed confirmation for your first few nights covers you if they do. A simple hostel or guesthouse booking works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Kyrgyzstan does not enforce a minimum cash requirement at the border. Carrying a credit card and a small amount of cash (around $100–$200 USD equivalent in som) is enough for practical purposes.Recommended
No visa, no fee — but don't skip the checklist
Entry is straightforward, but having a return ticket and accommodation proof ready saves time if asked. The 6-month passport rule is strictly enforced — double-check your passport's expiry date before you go.
Overstaying is costly
Staying beyond 90 days without an extension can result in fines of 1,000–5,000 KGS and a ban from re-entering for up to 1 year. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kyrgyzstan border
You'll enter via Manas International Airport in Bishkek, Osh Airport, or a land border from Kazakhstan. At the immigration counter, hand over your passport. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation. They'll stamp your passport and wave you through. The whole process takes 2–5 minutes.
2
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim (if flying), then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. Walk through the green channel if you have nothing to declare.
3
Activate your eSIM or buy a local SIM
If you pre-ordered an Airalo eSIM, it activates automatically when you connect to a local network. Otherwise, buy a SIM at the airport kiosk (Beeline, MegaCom, or O!) — costs about 200–500 KGS for a week of data.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The 90 days are cumulative — if you leave and re-enter, the clock resets partially. Overstaying can result in fines (around 1,000–5,000 KGS) and possible deportation.
No. The visa-free period is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country (e.g., to Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan) and re-enter. Alternatively, apply for a visa at the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bishkek before your 90 days expire — but this is rarely granted for tourism.
If you stay longer than 30 days, you must register with the State Registration Service within 5 business days of arrival. Hotels usually do this for you. If you're in a private apartment, you need to go to the local migration office. Fines for not registering are 1,000–5,000 KGS.
You will likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced at all borders. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes. There are several land border crossings, including at Korday (Almaty–Bishkek highway) and at Merke. The process is the same as at the airport — passport check, stamp, and you're in. Expect queues on weekends and holidays.
No. If you're transiting through Kyrgyzstan (e.g., flying from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan via Bishkek), you can stay up to 90 days visa-free. No transit visa is needed.
Kyrgyzstani som (KGS). ATMs are widely available in Bishkek and Osh, but less so in rural areas. Bring some cash in US dollars or euros — they can be exchanged at banks or exchange offices. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, but not everywhere.
