Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Russia. No minimum validity period beyond your departure date is required by Russian law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Russia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation, rental agreement, or a notarized invitation letter from your host. Russian migration law requires all foreign visitors to register their place of stay within 7 days — your accommodation provider usually handles this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds — around 500–1,000 RUB per day is a safe benchmark. A credit card statement or cash in hand works. I've never been asked for this at Moscow or St. Petersburg airports, but it's better to have it.Recommended
Migration card
Arrival/departure card
You will receive a small paper migration card on the plane or at passport control. Fill it out in Russian or English — keep the departure portion with your passport until you leave Russia. Losing it means a fine and a long wait at the border.Required
Overstay penalties are strict
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine and a ban from re-entering Russia for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave a few days before your 90 days are up.
Registration after 7 days
If you're staying longer than 7 days, make sure your hotel or host registers you. Hotels do this automatically; private hosts need to go to the local migration office. Keep the registration slip with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots or printouts of both. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Russian border control
At any Russian airport or land border, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your documents, take a photo, and stamp your passport. This usually takes 2-5 minutes.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the number of days you're allowed to stay (90). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Register your stay (if staying more than 7 days)
If you're staying in Russia for more than 7 consecutive days, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration office. Hotels do this automatically. If staying with friends/family, they need to handle it. You'll get a registration slip — keep it with your passport.
