Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (short-stay) required
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Spanish consulate in Sri Lanka. You need a completed application form, valid passport, recent photo, travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage), flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Processing takes 15 calendar days — apply at least 3 weeks before departure. The visa allows up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all 27 Schengen countries.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen area
Your passport must have at least two blank pages for visa stamps. The 3-month validity rule is strictly enforced at the border — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. The ticket must show you leave the Schengen zone before your visa expires. Budget airlines flying into Madrid and Barcelona are especially strict about checking this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a printed hotel reservation or a signed invitation letter from your host in Spain. Immigration may ask to see it at the border. If staying with friends or family, they need to provide a carta de invitación (invitation letter) certified by the local police station.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show sufficient means for your stay
Spain requires visitors to show at least €100 per person per day of stay, with a minimum of €900 regardless of trip length. Carry a mix of cash and a credit card — ATM receipts or bank statements work as proof. Immigration officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Sri Lankan passport holders must get a visa before traveling to Spain. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your departure to avoid delays.
Schengen rules apply
Spain is part of the Schengen Area. Your visa allows you to travel to 27 European countries. But you must enter through Spain or spend the most days there.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, application form, photos, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, and any supporting letters. Make copies of everything.
2
Book an appointment at the Spanish embassy
Contact the Spanish Embassy in Colombo to schedule a visa appointment. Appointments can be booked online or by phone. Expect a wait of 1–3 weeks.
3
Attend the visa interview
Go to the embassy on your appointment date. Submit your application, pay the fee (around €80 for adults), and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The interview is usually short — they verify your documents and ask about your trip.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can take longer if additional checks are needed. You will be notified when your passport is ready for collection.
5
Collect your passport
Pick up your passport from the embassy. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and spelling. If approved, you can travel to Spain.
6
Arrive in Spain
At the airport, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and visa. The officer may ask about your trip, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with your entry date.
