Sri Lankan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. There is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Sri Lankan nationals, so you must apply through a British embassy or visa application centre before you travel. Plan ahead — the process takes time and requires several documents.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK VisaYou must get this visa approved before you fly – there is no visa-on-arrival for Sri Lankan citizens.
Standard Visitor visa
Sri Lankan passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to the UK. Apply at the British High Commission or a UK Visa Application Centre in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is not eligible for the UK's eVisa system, so you must apply through the standard visa application process.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date – if it's too close, renew it before applying.
At least 6 months
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of departure from the UK (or from the date you apply for the visa, whichever is earlier).Required
Blank passport pagesThe border officer will stamp your passport – a blank page is needed for that.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the UK entry stamp. It is wise to have more than one blank page in case of additional stamps.Required
Return or onward ticketBorder officers want to see that you intend to leave the UK after your visit.
Proof of travel plans
You must have a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you will leave the UK before your visa expires. This is typically checked at the border.Required
Proof of fundsYou need to prove you can support yourself during your visit – bring recent bank statements.
Sufficient money for stay
You must be able to show you have enough money to cover your accommodation, living expenses, and return travel without working in the UK. Bank statements or payslips from the last 6 months are commonly requested.Required
Accommodation detailsBorder officers may ask where you're staying – have the address and booking confirmation ready.
Where you will stay
Provide evidence of where you will stay in the UK, such as hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from a host. This is part of the visa application and may be asked at the border.Required
Travel insuranceMedical care in the UK can be expensive for visitors – insurance protects you.
Recommended
Although not mandatory for a Standard Visitor visa, travel insurance covering medical expenses and trip cancellation is strongly recommended for all visitors to the UK.Recommended
Arrival declarationNo online arrival form is needed – just follow instructions from airline or border officers.
UK landing card
The UK does not require a separate arrival declaration for Sri Lankan passport holders. You will complete a landing card on the plane if required by the airline or border staff. Not required
No eVisa or visa on arrival
Sri Lankan passport holders are not eligible for the UK's eVisa system or any visa-on-arrival. You must apply through the standard embassy/consulate route. Don't be misled by online sources suggesting otherwise.
Apply well in advance
Processing can take 3 weeks or longer, and biometric appointments may be booked out. Start your application at least 2 months before your planned travel date to avoid last-minute stress.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to GOV.UK and fill out the visa application form for your intended visa type (e.g., Standard Visitor). You'll need to provide your travel details, personal history, and answer questions about your visit. Save your application reference number.
2
Pay the visa fee and book biometrics
After submitting the form, pay the fee online. Then book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Colombo. You'll choose a date and time for your biometrics.
3
Attend the biometric appointment
Go to the VAC in Colombo on your scheduled date. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any supporting documents. You'll provide fingerprints and a photo. The staff will also scan your documents.
4
Wait for a decision
UKVI processes most visitor visa applications within 3 weeks. You can track your application online. Some applications take longer if additional checks are needed.
5
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll be notified. Collect your passport from the VAC (or have it couriered). If approved, check the visa vignette for your entry dates and conditions.

As of 2026, the fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £115. This is non-refundable. Longer-term visas (2, 5, or 10 years) cost more. You pay online when you submit your application.
Generally, Standard Visitor visas cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the UK and apply for a new visa. There are very limited exceptions, such as medical treatment, but these are rare and require strong evidence.

You can reapply, but you'll need to pay the fee again and address the reasons for refusal. You can also request an administrative review if you believe the decision was wrong, but this is only for certain visa types and has a fee. It's best to consult the refusal letter for specific reasons.
Yes, the application form is completed online on GOV.UK. However, you must still attend an in-person biometric appointment at the VAC in Colombo. There is no eVisa option for Sri Lankan passport holders.
