Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK Visa Application
Apply for a Standard Visitor visa
Sri Lankan passport holders need a Standard Visitor visa before traveling to the UK. Apply online at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa, pay the £115 fee, and attend a biometric appointment at a UK visa application centre in Colombo. Processing takes 3 weeks on average, so apply at least a month before your trip.Apply for UK visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the whole time you're in the UK. There's no 6-month validity rule for UK visas, but the passport must have at least one blank page for the vignette sticker.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa holders
UK Border Force officers routinely check that you have a return or onward flight booked. If you're on a visitor visa, they expect to see a ticket leaving the UK before your visa expires.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your UK host ready. Immigration officers at Heathrow and other ports ask for this regularly, especially if you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or payslips
Carry recent bank statements showing you can support yourself during the visit. UKVI expects you to cover accommodation, food, and transport without working — roughly £100–150 per day depending on your plans.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Sri Lankan passport holders cannot enter the UK without a pre-approved visa. Start your application at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel date to allow for processing delays.
Biometric appointment is mandatory
You must attend a biometric appointment in person at the VFS Global centre in Colombo. No exceptions. Bring your passport and appointment confirmation.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a UK visa online
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa and complete the online application form. You'll need to choose the correct visa type — most tourists apply for a Standard Visitor visa. Pay the application fee (currently £115 for a 6-month visitor visa).
2
Book and attend a biometric appointment
After submitting your application, book an appointment at the nearest UK Visa Application Centre (VFS Global in Colombo). Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any supporting documents. They'll take your photo and fingerprints.
3
Wait for a decision
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks, but can be longer during peak seasons. You can track your application online. Once approved, the visa vignette will be stuck into your passport.
4
Travel to the UK
At UK border control, present your passport with the visa vignette. The officer may ask about your travel plans, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer honestly and calmly.
