Lithuanian passport holders need a visa to visit Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa waiver or eTA option for Lithuanian citizens. Plan ahead: processing times vary, and you'll need to submit biometrics as part of the application.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Lithuanian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Canada. Canada does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines sometimes enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa before travel
Lithuanian passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4 weeks before your trip — processing times vary by your home country. You will need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre.Apply for visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return flight or a ticket to your next destination. Have a printed or digital copy ready — if you cannot show onward travel, you may be refused boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements, a credit card, or cash available to show you can cover your expenses. There is no fixed minimum amount, but officers expect enough for accommodation, food, and transport for your entire visit.Recommended
No eTA for Lithuanian passport holders
Unlike many EU countries, Lithuania is not eligible for Canada's eTA program. You must apply for a full visitor visa. Do not attempt to travel with just an eTA — you will be denied boarding.
Biometrics are mandatory
All Lithuanian applicants aged 14–79 must give biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre. The nearest VAC is in Vilnius. You cannot skip this step — your application will not be processed without it.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, financial proof), and pay the fee (CAD $100 for a single entry, CAD $500 for a multiple-entry visa). After submission, you'll get a biometric instruction letter.
2
Give biometrics at a VAC
Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre in Vilnius (or another EU city if you're abroad). Bring your passport, the biometric letter, and pay the biometric fee (CAD $85). They'll take your fingerprints and photo. This step is mandatory for all applicants aged 14–79.
3
Wait for processing
Processing times vary — typically 2–8 weeks. You can track your application online. If approved, you'll receive a visa counterfoil in your passport (or a letter if you applied from a country where Canada doesn't issue physical visas). Do not book flights until you have the visa.
4
Arrive at a Canadian airport
At immigration, present your passport with the visa, your return ticket, and accommodation proof. The officer may ask about your plans and funds. Answer honestly and briefly. You'll get a stamp allowing entry for up to 6 months (officer's discretion).

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you're transiting through a Canadian airport to a third country, you still need a visa (or an eTA if you qualify, but Lithuanian passport holders do not qualify for eTA). Apply for a transit visa — it's cheaper (CAD $75) and faster than a full visitor visa, but the process is similar.
Up to 6 months per entry, but the border officer decides the exact duration at the port of entry. They'll stamp your passport with a date. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension before your current status expires — cost is CAD $100.
No. A visitor visa only allows tourism, visiting family, or short business meetings. You cannot work or study in a program longer than 6 months. For work or study, you need a separate work permit or study permit.
You'll receive a letter explaining the reason — common ones are insufficient funds, weak ties to Lithuania, or incomplete documents. You can reapply, but address the reason first. There's no appeal process. Consider consulting an immigration consultant if refused twice.
Yes, the officer may ask. Have bank statements or a credit card ready. There's no fixed minimum, but showing you have at least CAD $2,000–$3,000 for a 2-week trip is reasonable. A sponsor letter from a Canadian host can also help.
No. Canada has no visa-on-arrival program for Lithuanian citizens. You must have a valid visa before you board your flight. Airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass.
The application fee is CAD $100 for a single-entry visa, or CAD $500 for a multiple-entry visa (valid for up to 10 years). Biometrics cost an additional CAD $85. Fees are non-refundable even if your application is refused.
