Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure from Kazakhstan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kazakhstan
Immigration officers at Almaty and Nur-Sultan airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may scan the barcode.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel confirmation or host's address ready. Immigration may ask where you are staying — a printed booking confirmation or a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least 50,000 KZT (about $110 USD) per day in cash or a credit card statement. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show you have enough for your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Kazakhstan. If it's even a day short, you'll be refused entry. Check your passport now.
No visa, no extension
The 30-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you overstay, you'll face fines and possible deportation. Plan your trip to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at airport
When you land at Almaty or Nur-Sultan (Astana) airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for Kazakh citizens and foreigners. Join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents (return ticket, accommodation booking) if asked. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp it. No visa is needed.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is clear and the date is correct before leaving the counter. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items.
