Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Tonga. Tonga does not enforce a strict 6-month validity rule, but airlines may ask for it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tonga
Immigration officers at Fuaʻamotu International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before you clear the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
You may be asked where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address is enough. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for evidence of sufficient funds. Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least 200 TOP per day of your stay. Cash is not required.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Tonga requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport doesn't meet the rule, you won't even get on the plane.
No visa, but have proof of onward travel ready
Even though you don't need a visa, immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or screenshot on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from arrival. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Print or save screenshots of confirmations. Arrange travel insurance and a local SIM if you want.
2
Arrive at Fuaʻamotu International Airport (TBU)
Most international flights land at Tonga's main airport near Nuku'alofa. After deplaning, follow signs to the immigration hall. There's usually one queue for all foreign visitors.
3
Present your documents at immigration
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane), and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation booking if asked. The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect your luggage and clear customs
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any food, plants, or animal products — Tonga is strict about biosecurity.

You will be denied boarding by your airline and refused entry at Tonga immigration. Renew your passport before you travel.
No online pre-registration is required. You'll fill out an arrival card on the plane — it's a standard form asking for your name, passport details, flight info, and address in Tonga.
Yes, but you must clear customs and immigration at an official port of entry (Neiafu in Vava'u, Nuku'alofa in Tongatapu, or Pangai in Ha'apai). The same visa-free rules apply, but you'll also need to check biosecurity requirements for your vessel.
No, departure tax is included in your airline ticket price. You don't need to pay anything extra at the airport when leaving.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Tonga. If you realize you'll overstay, contact the Tonga Immigration Office in Nuku'alofa before your permit expires.
No vaccinations are mandatory for entry. But it's wise to be up to date on routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, etc.). Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for most travellers.
