Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in China. Chinese immigration does not enforce a 6-month validity rule beyond your stay, but some airlines may ask for it at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from China
Immigration officers at major airports like Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong regularly ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may also check it at airline check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Chinese immigration rarely asks for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Have a recent bank statement or credit card available. Immigration almost never asks for it for short visa-free stays, but it's a standard fallback question.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter China. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
Keep your passport with you at all times
Chinese law requires you to carry your original passport (not a copy) at all times. Hotels will need it for registration, and police may conduct random checks. A lost passport can cause serious delays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave home, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Chinese immigration
At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any supporting documents ready. The officer will check your visa-free eligibility and stamp your passport.
3
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer clearly and politely. They'll ask about the purpose of your visit (tourism/business) and how long you're staying.
4
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — it shows your allowed stay period.
5
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim. You're now legally in China. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks.
